Radiologic-pathologic correlation. Cerebral toxoplasmosis and lymphoma in AIDS.
A 37-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)positive man had a 6-month history of progressive left-sided weakness and sensory loss. Additional symptoms included a 15.75-kg weight loss, fatigue, and anorexia. He had been HIV-seropositive for 21⁄2 years but had no previous acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining illnesses (Centers for Disease Control criteria, 1987). He had been on...

Interferon (IFN)-gamma is an absolute requirement for resistance against acute acquired infection with Toxoplasma gondii and development of toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE) during the late stage of infection. Multiple populations of both T and non-T cells are important sources of IFN-gamma in resistance. In the absence of IFN-gamma-producing non-T cells, T cells cannot prevent TE. Interleukin-12, ...

We conducted a retrospective study of AIDS-associated cerebral toxoplasmosis. Eighteen patients received pyrimethamine plus sulfadiazine and 25 co-trimoxazole, with comparable baseline characteristics. There were no differences in clinical outcomes, but co-trimoxazole was better tolerated (p = 0.066). There was also a trend towards more deaths among patients who received glucocorticoids.
متن کاملVentriculitis: a rare case of primary cerebral toxoplasmosis in AIDS patient and literature review.
Cerebral toxoplasmosis remains the most important neurological opportunistic infection and the most common cause of intracerebral mass lesion in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We report a case of an adult AIDS patient with an atypical pattern of toxoplasma encephalitis, presenting with ventriculitis and obstructive hydrocephalus without any focal parenchymal lesion.
متن کاملDiagnostic Approach to Ocular Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis is deemed a local event, which may fail to evoke a detectable systemic immune response. A correct diagnosis of the disease is a necessary basis for estimating its clinical burden. This is not so difficult in a typical clinical picture. In atypical cases, further diagnostic efforts are to be installed. Although the aqueous humor may be analyzed for specific antibodi...
